UPDATE: New York health officials are sounding the alarm as COVID-19 vaccinations drop sharply, just as flu season intensifies. Dr. Jim McDonald, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, revealed alarming statistics today, stating, “For every one person I have in the hospital attributed to flu, I have three attributed to COVID.”
As of November 26, 2025, vaccination rates for COVID-19 in some upstate New York counties are as low as 6% to 10%, compared to flu vaccination rates which range from 20% to 30%. Dr. McDonald expressed deep concern, noting, “We’re about 30% less than last year in COVID vaccinations. That concerns me.”
With the holiday season approaching, gatherings will increase, raising the risk of virus transmission. Dr. McDonald emphasized the importance of vaccinations, stating, “If you get that COVID and flu vaccine, you’re going to be in better shape.” The risks of being in close proximity to others during this time cannot be overstated.
In recognition of the urgency of the situation, Dr. Danielle Wales from Albany Med Health System advises the public to consult their doctors regarding immunity-boosting supplements. “Supplements don’t actually treat the illness,” she cautioned. “You should reach out to your doctor if you get sick, especially if you have a major illness.”
Health officials are urging New Yorkers to take immediate action, as the dual threat of flu and COVID-19 looms large. With vaccination rates declining at such a critical time, experts are pushing for greater awareness and participation in vaccination programs.
As we head into the busiest time of the year for travel and social gatherings, the message is clear: get vaccinated to protect yourself and those around you. The stakes are high, and the time to act is NOW.
Stay tuned for further updates as this developing situation unfolds.
