UPDATE: A series of community events are set to energize Luzerne County this week, offering residents engaging activities from book readings to festive dinners. These events highlight the vibrant local culture and the importance of community involvement.
The Luzerne County St. David’s Society is hosting a children’s book reading at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at the Ousterhout Library, located on S. Franklin St. in Wilkes-Barre. This engaging event is designed to inspire young readers and foster a love for literature.
Later that day, at 1 p.m., the Society will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Miner’s Memorial on Public Square, adjacent to the King’s College building. This event is weather permitting and serves as a tribute to the mining community’s legacy.
On Tuesday, February 24, the Wyoming Valley Real Estate Investors Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at Grotto Pizza, 337 Wyoming Valley Mall Road, Wilkes-Barre Township. The meeting will feature Lieutenant Ryan Foy of the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department, discussing sheriff sales. New members are welcome, with a $15 entry fee applicable towards yearly dues.
Mark your calendars for the 147th Annual St. David’s Day Banquet on March 1 at 4 p.m. at the Westmoreland Club, 59 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. Tickets are priced at $50, or $150 for patron tickets, which include cocktails and a traditional Welsh dinner featuring potato and leek soup and chicken Française. Additionally, the Allan Hamilton Dickson Spring Writers Series will feature acclaimed poet and educator Brionne Janae on Wednesday, February 25, at 7 p.m. in the Kirby Hall Salon at Wilkes University. Janae, a recent NEA Creative Writing Fellow, will present her works and engage with the audience. This event is free and open to the public.
Families are invited to the Halfway to Halloween Third Annual Trunk or Treat on April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Luzerne County Children, Youth and Families, aimed at providing treats and safety information for children in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
In an exciting announcement, the Alhamar Caravan No. 4 will host a spring dinner dance for Special Olympics bowlers and guests on March 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fox Hill Country Club, 454 Tunkhannock Ave., Exeter. Reservations are due by March 11 and the cost is $35.
