URGENT UPDATE: The community of Duluth, MN is mourning the loss of Charles (Chuck) M. Payment, who passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 78. Chuck’s family expresses profound gratitude to Beehive and Gentiva for their compassionate support during his final days.
Born on February 3, 1948, in Frankfurt, MI, Chuck grew up in Empire, MI, where he developed a passion for the outdoors and community involvement. A graduate of Glen Lake High School in 1966, he pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech, balancing academics with his role as a Ski Patrol and his commitment to ROTC.
After graduating, Chuck served in the Army Reserve from 1972 to 1980, reaching the rank of Captain. He embarked on a distinguished 39-year career in Fuel Transmission starting at Great Lakes Gas Transmission in 1972.
In 1973, Chuck met his future wife, Alyce Heimsjo, at the Buffalo House in Duluth. Together, they raised two children, Brooke and Cory. Chuck was not only a devoted father but also a passionate youth hockey coach for Cory’s teams, often braving chilly nights to maintain the local rinks.
For over 35 years, Chuck and Alyce were enthusiastic supporters of the UMD Bulldogs Men’s Hockey team, cheering from the stands and fostering a love for hockey in their community.
After retiring in 2011, Chuck embraced his love for nature, spending time on Lake Superior, fishing, and hunting. He cherished trips to Montana with Cory, fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan, and hunting in South Dakota with close friends.
Chuck was predeceased by his brother, Lou Payment, but is survived by his wife Alyce, son Cory, daughter Brooke Day (Aric), their children Leo and Elin Day, and his brother Leigh Payment (Linda).
A celebration of life will be held on March 21, 2026, at 11 AM with visitation starting at 10 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Trinity Lutheran Church in Chuck’s honor.
As the community reflects on Chuck’s legacy, his favorite fishing quote resonates: “The two best times to fish is when it’s raining and when it ain’t,” reminding all of us of his passion for life and the outdoors.
Stay tuned for more updates on the community’s tributes to this beloved leader.
