URGENT UPDATE: Volunteers are urgently needed at Shoal Creek Park in Montevallo, Alabama, on February 28, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Shoal Creek Park Foundation is hosting its first-ever “Privet Pull,” aiming to combat the invasive Chinese privet that threatens the park’s native ecosystem.
This community-driven event is critical as invasive plants are rapidly overtaking native species, disrupting the local habitat. Organizers emphasize that even a few hours of volunteer work can significantly improve the park’s health for both people and wildlife. “We need a lot of people to come out and make quick work of this damaging plant,” officials stated.
The problem stems from Chinese privet, which was introduced to the U.S. in the 19th century. This invasive species outcompetes native vegetation and offers minimal ecological benefits, posing a risk to local wildlife. Its toxic berries are harmful to mammals, while its nectar and fruit provide insufficient nutrition for birds and insects, leading to malnourishment.
Participants are encouraged to wear boots and bring gloves, along with any preferred weeding tools. Equipment and water will be provided, and lunch will be served for volunteers afterward. The event is supported by various organizations, including Jefferson County Greenways, the Alabama Audubon Society, and Rural Bridge Community Works.
Shoal Creek Park, located at 2781 Highway 119, was willed to the city by Betty Lawler, a Montevallo native, for preservation as a nature area open to the public. Since its establishment in 2017, the Shoal Creek Park Foundation has collaborated with the city to enhance trails, improve accessibility, and promote beautification efforts, turning the area into a beloved destination for recreation and history.
As community members rally to protect this vital ecosystem, your participation can make a real difference. Mark your calendars for the Privet Pull and help create a healthier environment for all. Further details will be released as the date approaches, but the call for volunteers is clear: your help is needed NOW!
