UPDATE: The Elyria Community Partnership has just announced an urgent call for artists to create a stunning mural on the Elyria City Hall. This large-scale project aims to capture the essence of Elyria’s rich history and vibrant future, with applications due by noon on February 10, 2024.
Located prominently on a wall facing Ely Square, the mural will serve as a beacon of community pride and artistic expression. According to Monet Roberts-Walton, executive director of the Elyria Community Partnership, “We’re really looking for an artist who can respect Elyria’s past while also helping us tell a story about where we’re headed.” This initiative is not just about art; it’s about engaging the community and showcasing Elyria’s identity.
The selected artist will collaborate closely with city officials, including members of the City Council and a focus group of stakeholders, including youth representatives. “This is a highly collaborative process,” Roberts-Walton emphasized. The artist will participate in a workshop to gather community feedback and refine their concepts, ensuring that the final mural resonates with local voices.
Artists from local, regional, and national levels are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have experience with large-scale murals, and while no specific themes are mandated, stakeholders have suggested inspiration from elements like cultural heritage, nature, and bold abstract styles. “We want their first impression to reflect how beautiful and meaningful this community is,” Roberts-Walton added, highlighting the diverse features of Elyria, from its scenic waterfalls to its historical significance as the county seat.
This mural project aligns with the Elyria Community Partnership’s mission to enhance quality of life and bolster downtown vibrancy. Public art was identified as a vital priority during the organization’s 2023 vibrancy action plan, which was informed by extensive community input. “Art creates a sense of value and pride,” Roberts-Walton stated. “It shows residents and investors that this is a place that cares about itself and is worth investing in.”
The goal is to unveil the mural later this year, ideally coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and Elyria’s summer programming, pending approval from the city’s review process.
Artists interested in participating must submit their application materials in a single PDF not exceeding 15MB to [email protected], with the subject line “Elyria City Hall Mural.” For more details, please visit the Elyria Community Partnership’s official website.
This is a unique opportunity to leave a lasting mark on Elyria’s landscape while engaging with the community’s rich heritage and aspirations for the future. Don’t miss out on this chance to be part of something meaningful!
