Applications for the inaugural class of the University of Georgia School of Medicine are now officially open. This significant step follows the school’s receipt of preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education on February 13, 2024. The establishment of this medical school marks an important addition to the state’s healthcare education landscape.
To facilitate recruitment, the School of Medicine plans to host several open house events. These include a virtual open house on February 20, 2024, and an in-person session on February 27, 2024. Additionally, informational sessions will be available for prospective students to learn about the campus facilities and the admissions process. The school will also participate in health fairs across Georgia, including the UGA Health Professions Fair on February 26, 2024.
The School of Medicine aims to admit applicants who resonate with its mission of enhancing health across communities in Georgia and beyond. Founding Dean Shelley Nuss emphasized the importance of selecting students who are “collaborative, compassionate, and committed to improving health” in the state.
Primary applications must be submitted by March 6, 2024, followed by secondary applications due on March 13, 2024. The admissions team will conduct rolling interviews until final decisions are announced in April. The school anticipates enrolling 60 students for its first class, set to commence in the fall.
This inaugural class represents a historic milestone for Georgia as it becomes the second public medical school in the state. Currently, Georgia ranks 39th nationally in active patient care physicians per capita and 41st in public medical students per capita. Expanding in-state medical education is crucial for addressing healthcare needs and improving health outcomes across the region.
As the University of Georgia School of Medicine embarks on this journey, it is poised to make a significant impact on the medical community and healthcare landscape in Georgia.
