URGENT UPDATE: Tubi is experiencing a remarkable surge in viewership thanks to the iconic Looney Tunes, which were transferred from HBO Max in August 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has made 800 Looney Tunes shorts available on the free streaming platform, although 200 of these remain locked due to “cultural sensitivities.”
According to Tubi’s acquisition head, Samuel Harowitz, this move has proven to be a significant win. In a recent interview, he confirmed that Looney Tunes is among the Top 10 best-performing series on Tubi, attracting viewers from various generations and demographics.
The popularity of classic animations is evident, as Tubi also features beloved series like Tom & Jerry, The Flintstones, and the 1996 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Harowitz noted that these classics represent “one of the biggest fandoms we serve on the platform.”
In a bid to keep Looney Tunes on Tubi, the company is currently in active negotiations with WBD to secure the rights for several years. While no discussions are underway for new Looney content or licensing the anticipated Coyote vs. Acme, Tubi aims to expand its offerings.
For viewers, the existing episodes are presented in non-chronological order, with advertisements only airing between shorts. Animation historian Jerry Beck contributed to the restoration of these episodes, ensuring they look “day-one brand new.” Beck expressed satisfaction with Tubi’s handling of the Looney Tunes, stating, “I’m kind of glad [WBD] took them off HBO Max and allowed other networks to use them so we can all see them.”
Tubi’s strategy to spotlight these beloved characters is not only boosting its viewership but also providing a platform for nostalgia and joy. As negotiations continue, fans and viewers alike eagerly await what’s next for the Looney Tunes on Tubi.
Stay tuned for further developments on this exciting partnership and the potential for more classic animations to join the lineup.
