Trump Warns Russia: Long-Range Tomahawks for Ukraine Possible

UPDATE: President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Russia, indicating he may deploy long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine if the ongoing conflict does not reach a resolution soon. This declaration, made aboard Air Force One on October 8, 2023, signals a potential escalation in U.S. military support for Ukraine amidst Russia’s aggressive actions.

During his flight to Israel, Trump stated, “I might say, ’Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I’m going to send them Tomahawks.” He emphasized the weapon’s offensive capabilities, asserting that “Russia does not need that.” This warning follows a recent conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where the possibility of supplying these missiles was discussed.

Trump’s remarks come as Russia escalates its attacks on Ukraine, including recent strikes on the nation’s power grid, which are part of a broader strategy to undermine Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter. In light of this, the Kremlin has expressed “extreme concern” over the U.S. potentially supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles, which could allow Ukraine to hit deeper into Russian territory.

“Do they want to have Tomahawks going in that direction? I don’t think so,” Trump remarked, signaling a toughening stance against Russia.

In a follow-up interview, Zelenskyy described his call with Trump as “very productive,” revealing discussions about enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and long-range capabilities. He noted, “I’m waiting for the president to say yes,” regarding the approval of Tomahawk missiles.

This development is critical as Zelenskyy has been in talks with U.S. officials about acquiring various long-range precision strike weapons. The implications of such support could significantly impact the dynamics of the conflict, pushing Russia to reconsider its strategies.

With a senior Ukrainian delegation set to visit the U.S. this week, the situation remains fluid. Trump’s recent comments reflect a notable shift in his approach, as he previously suggested concessions were necessary for peace. Now, he asserts that Ukraine could regain all territories lost to Russia, a position that could reshape U.S. involvement in the conflict.

As tensions escalate, Trump remarked, “I really think Putin would look great if he got this settled,” indicating a belief that a resolution is possible but will require substantial pressure on Russia.

Expect further developments in the coming days as the situation evolves and further talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials progress. The potential provision of Tomahawks could redefine the conflict and influence diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Russia.
