Trump Expands Federal Law Enforcement in D.C. Starting Tonight

UPDATE: Starting tonight, the Trump administration is ramping up federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C. The announcement was made by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, just days after a high-profile assault on a former government staffer, underscoring rising safety concerns in the capital.

The increased federal presence, commencing at midnight, is set for an initial duration of seven days, with potential extensions. Leavitt stated, “President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. There will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C.” This initiative aims to enhance safety for residents, lawmakers, and visitors alike.

The operation will be spearheaded by the U.S. Park Police, alongside agencies such as the D.C. Police, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and DEA. The heavily visible units will focus on tourist hotspots and other identified crime areas.

This swift action is a response to several alarming incidents, including the tragic killings of two Israeli Embassy staffers earlier this year. However, it is noteworthy that preliminary data from D.C. Police indicates that violent crime has decreased by 26% compared to last year.

The White House confirmed that the measures align with Trump’s executive order from March 2023, titled “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.” This order mandates strict enforcement of laws related to public safety and quality of life.

In a related statement, Trump hinted at potentially taking over the D.C. Police Department and deploying the National Guard in response to ongoing crime issues. “We’re going to beautify the city. We’re not going to let it, and that includes bringing in the National Guard maybe very quickly too,” Trump stated from the Oval Office.

As the situation develops, many are left wondering about the implications of increased federal oversight and how it will affect daily life in the nation’s capital. The White House is currently seeking input from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser regarding these developments.

Moving forward, residents and visitors should stay alert as the heightened law enforcement presence unfolds, aiming to ensure safety and security in one of the country’s most significant cities.
