URGENT UPDATE: President Donald Trump and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa of Bahrain met at the White House on October 25, 2023, to sign a landmark agreement that paves the way for a civilian nuclear deal. This agreement is a significant step in strengthening the energy ties between the two nations.
The memorandum of understanding, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, opens negotiations for a “123 agreement.” This will enable U.S. and American companies to invest in and construct nuclear energy projects in Bahrain, a strategic island nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia, home to around 1.5 million people.
In a statement, Rubio emphasized, “The United States is prepared to be a partner with any nation on Earth that wants to pursue a civil nuclear program that clearly is not geared towards weapons and or threatening the security of their neighbors.” This commitment underscores the U.S. intention to support peaceful nuclear energy initiatives globally.
Crown Prince Al Khalifa also revealed plans for a substantial $17 billion investment in the United States, describing it as a move that “builds upon a legacy that we’re very proud of.” This investment reflects Bahrain’s commitment to fostering economic ties and enhancing bilateral relations with the U.S.
During a subsequent Q&A session, President Trump defended Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, stating, “she’s doing a great job.” Additionally, he addressed ongoing speculation about Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, affirming he has no plans to dismiss him despite recent criticisms over the Fed’s interest rate policies.
As the day unfolds, President Trump will also host the Prime Minister of Qatar for dinner, furthering diplomatic discussions in the region.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story and its implications for U.S.-Middle Eastern relations.
