UPDATE: In a pivotal update for fans, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has just confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is “still a long way off,” but hints at an unexpected release strategy akin to the recent Oblivion remaster. During a recent conversation with GQ, Howard revealed intriguing insights into the highly anticipated game.
Howard described The Elder Scrolls 6 as “the everyday thing” developers are actively working on, acknowledging the long wait since the iconic Skyrim released 14 years ago. “It’s also good for an audience to have a break,” he stated, reflecting on the lengthy gap since the last main series entry.
In a heartwarming twist, Howard oversaw a special three-hour playtest involving fans who donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. These dedicated fans helped design a character for the game, showcasing the strong community ties surrounding the franchise. “We spent an hour-and-a-half or so for them to tell us about their character, talk about the game, about why they love The Elder Scrolls,” Howard shared.
Despite the excitement, Howard tempered expectations, stating that a release is still distant. However, he tantalizingly suggested that Bethesda may adopt a surprise launch model for future titles: “My perfect version… is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.” This echoes the strategy used for the recent Oblivion remaster, which Howard referred to as “a test run.”
While it’s hard to imagine Microsoft allowing a major title like The Elder Scrolls 6 to launch without a comprehensive marketing campaign, Howard’s comments have stirred speculation about a potentially shorter promotional period. Fans are left wondering if the wait for the next installment could be significantly reduced.
As Bethesda juggles multiple projects, including the Fallout TV series and ongoing updates for Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls Online, the gaming community is urged to stay tuned for more updates. Howard’s insights have not only reignited excitement but have also highlighted the importance of fan engagement in the development process.
