UPDATE: A Texas man has just unveiled his backyard oasis, transforming it into a stunning pub that cost him $61,000. Stephen Hutyra, a 42-year-old program analyst from West, Texas, has created a personal retreat dubbed The Thirsty Goat, where he now hosts friends and family for festive gatherings.
Hutyra’s ambitious project began in November 2020, when he was inspired by a Facebook post showcasing a backyard pub in England. The idea resonated deeply, as Hutyra had spent three years in England during his Navy service, falling in love with the local pub culture. “We have a saying that everything is bigger and better in Texas,” Hutyra stated, reflecting his vision for a grander version of the pub he admired.
After securing his wife’s approval, he immediately began purchasing furniture and materials, even before having a structure in place. In July 2023, Hutyra took the plunge, signing a bank loan for $44,320 and obtaining the necessary permits to bring his dream to life.
Construction commenced in August 2023 with a team of contractors laying the groundwork for the pub. Hutyra emphasized the importance of hiring professionals, as he had never taken on a project of this scale. By November 2023, the contractors completed their work, handing the project over to Hutyra and his family, who took on the finishing touches.
Hutyra’s meticulous planning paid off, with the pub featuring a dark-wood bar, cozy seating, and festive decor, making it a perfect venue for holiday celebrations. The interior resembles a scene from a Hallmark movie, adorned with string lights and framed pictures, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed it since finishing back in August,” he said. “But we’re only just starting to see how much we’re going to use it.”
The name The Thirsty Goat pays homage to Hutyra’s Navy career, as goats historically served as mascots for sailors. The pub also holds sentimental value, with elements such as a tip jar from 1903 and bar top wood salvaged from a barn owned by his great-great-great-grandfather.
Hutyra’s backyard pub has quickly become a hub for family gatherings, where they spend late nights together, enjoying each other’s company. “We find ourselves sitting out here in the middle of the week until midnight,” he shared, highlighting the emotional connection the pub has fostered.
As Hutyra continues to host gatherings, The Thirsty Goat stands not only as a testament to his dream but also as a cherished space for family memories. This heartwarming story of creativity and family connection is sure to captivate and inspire others looking to make their dreams a reality.
