Tesla’s ‘Mad Max’ Mode Under Federal Investigation for Safety Risks

URGENT UPDATE: Tesla’s controversial new driving mode, dubbed “Mad Max,” is now under investigation by federal regulators amid alarming safety concerns. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an inquiry as reports emerge that this mode allows vehicles to disregard speed limits, raising serious questions about public safety.

Earlier this month, Tesla rolled out a firmware update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, introducing two new modes: “Sloth,” which drives cautiously, and “Mad Max,” which is designed for aggressive driving. This latest development has caught the eye of federal authorities, who are scrutinizing the potential risks associated with enabling vehicles to operate recklessly.

According to Reuters, numerous Tesla owners have reported that the “Mad Max” mode frequently ignores speed limits. This scrutiny comes on the heels of a significant legal setback for Tesla, which recently lost a wrongful death lawsuit claiming that a vehicle operating in Autopilot mode fatally struck a couple, with the car reportedly ignoring a stop sign while traveling at 62 miles per hour.

The NHTSA has confirmed that it is in contact with Tesla to gather more information on the implications of the “Mad Max” mode. The agency has previously opened investigations into Tesla’s FSD system after receiving dozens of reports regarding vehicles running stop signs or veering into oncoming traffic.

“The human behind the wheel is fully responsible,” the NHTSA reminded in a statement, emphasizing the legal accountability of drivers using Tesla’s FSD technology.

Critics are voicing serious concerns about Tesla’s approach to safety. Attorney Brett Schreiber, whose firm won the recent wrongful death case, argues that Tesla is “deliberately programming cars to exceed speed limits and drive aggressively.” He accuses the company of prioritizing aesthetics and sales over the safety of its customers and the public.

This situation not only raises legal questions but also prompts a broader discussion about the implications of autonomous driving technology. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Tesla will respond and what measures, if any, will be implemented to enhance vehicle safety.

As this story develops, motorists and Tesla owners should stay informed about future updates from the NHTSA and Tesla. The implications of the findings could have far-reaching effects on the future of self-driving technology and legislation in the United States.

For now, Tesla’s users are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant while driving, especially when utilizing advanced driving features like FSD. More updates are expected as federal regulators continue their investigation into Tesla’s “Mad Max” mode.
