UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, Syracuse’s William Kyle III delivered a crucial free throw with just 13.8 seconds remaining, sealing a stunning 62-60 upset against No. 13 Tennessee on Tuesday night. This victory marks Syracuse’s first win over Tennessee since November 28, 1993.
Fans at the Carrier Dome erupted as Kyle, who has struggled with free throws, stepped up to the line tied at 60. Despite being a 42% foul shooter, both Syracuse coach Adrian Autry and teammate J.J. Starling had unwavering confidence in the 6-foot-9 center. “One free throw. That’s all we needed,” Autry stated after the game. “He stepped right in and made the next one. That was huge today.”
Earlier in the game, Kyle contributed significantly with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Despite missing his first free throw, he remained focused and delivered when it mattered most, sinking the second attempt. “I was just thinking about my routine, and I just went up there, a make or a miss, just live with the result,” Kyle said.
The victory was a much-needed boost for Syracuse, improving their record to 5-3 after consecutive losses to Houston, Kansas, and Iowa State in the previous week’s Players Era tournament. The win was celebrated fervently by fans, who stormed the court, leading to a $50,000 fine for the university. “It’s amazing… to have our work really pay off,” Starling expressed, acknowledging the significance of the moment.
Autry welcomed the court storming, emphasizing its positive implications for the team’s spirit. “We want to have more of those. When they’re storming the court, that’s a good sign,” he noted.
As Syracuse fans savor this monumental victory, the team looks ahead, eager to build on this momentum in the coming games. With their next matchup on the horizon, the excitement surrounding Syracuse basketball is palpable. The Orange are determined to continue their upward trajectory, and the community’s support remains a driving force behind their efforts.
