UPDATE: A suspect linked to a shocking series of subway slashings in Brooklyn has been apprehended in connection with a burglary early Saturday morning. Authorities confirm that Odyssey Head, 27, was arrested around 5 a.m. on July 15, 2023, after allegedly breaking into a building on New York Avenue and causing significant damage.
Police report that during the burglary, Head damaged a washer and dryer and set fire to clothing items before fleeing the scene. His arrest came just hours after he is suspected of randomly attacking three men on the subway, all of whom suffered slashes to the left side of their faces.
The first attack unfolded on a Q train early Saturday morning. Subsequent assaults occurred on Saturday night just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Foster Avenue and New York Avenue, and again on Sunday morning just before 7 a.m. on Newkirk Avenue, all in East Flatbush. The victims, aged 37, 53, and 56, were transported to local hospitals and are reported to be stable.
During his arrest, authorities found a kitchen knife in Head’s possession, believed to be the weapon used in the subway slashing incidents. Although he has not yet been formally charged in connection with the slashings, police are investigating the linkage.
Officials highlight the urgency of the situation, as the community grapples with the fear instilled by these random attacks. Head has been taken to Maimonides Medical Center for a psychological evaluation, raising questions about his mental state at the time of the attacks.
As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain vigilant. The police are enhancing patrols in the area and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. This incident underscores the pressing need for safety measures in public transit systems, where passengers should feel secure.
