UPDATE: Stanford’s offense faltered in a crushing 27-3 loss to BYU on Saturday night, failing to cross the opponent’s 40-yard line until the fourth quarter. Interim coach Frank Reich attributed the disappointing performance to both player execution and coaching deficiencies, explicitly standing by quarterback Ben Gulbranson.
In a game marked by missed opportunities, Stanford (0-2) struggled significantly, gaining a mere 20 yards on eight possessions in the first half. “I’m not going to make any quick judgment on this,” Reich stated. “Quarterback play is the byproduct of a lot of things. We need better protection and coaching.”
Gulbranson, who completed 17 of 32 passes for 142 yards and two interceptions, took full responsibility for the team’s lackluster performance. “This one’s on me,” he conceded after the game. “I just have to be better out there.” Despite a brief surge in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal managed to score their fewest points since a 41-3 loss to Arizona State in 2007.
The defense, however, showcased resilience, holding BYU (2-0) to just 14 points at halftime despite the Cougars starting several drives in favorable field positions. “The defense played unbelievable,” Reich praised. “They gave us every opportunity to be in that game.”
Gulbranson’s struggles were evident early on, including an overthrown pass that led to a critical interception. He was also sacked and lost a fumble, compounding the offensive woes. A fourth-quarter field goal from Emmet Kenney salvaged the shutout, marking a brief moment of success for the Cardinal.
Looking ahead, Stanford faces an urgent need to revamp its offensive strategy before their home opener against Boston College next week. With two consecutive ineffective games, questions loom over whether Reich might consider starting top recruit Elijah Brown to ignite the stagnant offense.
“We’re never going to be OK with losing,” Reich emphasized. “We’re here to get better and to win.” As Stanford prepares for a crucial next stretch of games, including matchups against Virginia and San Jose State, the pressure is on to turn the tide and avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles.
With the team’s morale on the line, senior cornerback Collin Wright echoed the sentiment of resilience, stating, “We just have to keep swinging.” The Cardinal’s future hinges on their ability to execute and adapt as they enter a pivotal phase of their season.
