UPDATE: St. Bonaventure University head coach Mark Schmidt is set to retire after the current basketball season, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel earlier today. This announcement comes just hours before the Bonnies play their final regular-season game and prepare for the Atlantic 10 tournament next week.
At the age of 63, Schmidt has dedicated 19 seasons to the Bonnies, becoming a beloved figure in Olean, New York. Under his leadership, St. Bonaventure made three NCAA tournament appearances and secured two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles. His achievements earned him the title of Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year twice, in 2016 and 2021.
The Bonnies experienced a remarkable run in 2018, winning their last 12 games to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. They entered as an 11-seed, defeating UCLA in the First Four before falling to Florida in the first round. Throughout his tenure, Schmidt holds an impressive record of 339-253, making him the all-time wins leader in St. Bonaventure men’s basketball history.
Before joining St. Bonaventure in 2007, Schmidt coached at Robert Morris for six seasons, where he had a record of 82-90. His coaching journey also includes assistant roles at Xavier, Loyola (Maryland), and Penn State.
In a significant move for the program, St. Bonaventure brought on former ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski as the general manager last season. Wojnarowski is expected to play a crucial role in the search for Schmidt’s successor.
As the news of Schmidt’s retirement spreads, the basketball community reflects on his impactful legacy at St. Bonaventure. Fans and players alike are eager to see how the program will navigate this transition in leadership.
