Single Mom Moves to Thailand, Finds Closer Bond with Daughter

UPDATE: A single mother, Donetta Barber, and her daughter, Maleah, have relocated to Bangkok, Thailand, in July 2023, seeking a slower, more affordable lifestyle that has already strengthened their bond.

Just a few months into their new life, Barber shares that her daughter expressed immense gratitude for the move, stating, “Mommy, thank you for moving us to Thailand. I’m just so grateful for this experience.” This heartfelt moment underscores a transformative journey for the pair, who are now thriving in a vibrant new culture.

The decision to move came after Barber, 39, realized the high cost of living in Fresno, California, was incompatible with her desire for a more meaningful life. She noted that she could cut her costs in half by relocating abroad. “What’s keeping me here in the US? There’s nothing,” Barber remarked.

The mother-daughter duo had previously traveled frequently, with two to three trips each year, but the pandemic provided Barber a new perspective. During a stay in Costa Rica, she met Americans who had made the leap to live abroad, igniting her dream of doing the same. Inspired, Barber and Maleah packed their bags and rented out their California home to embark on this new adventure.

Since arriving in Bangkok, they have settled into a spacious two-bedroom apartment, featuring abundant natural light and convenient public transport access. Their monthly rent stands at 37,000 Thai baht (approximately $1,150), and Barber has budgeted around 80,000 Thai baht (about $2,500) for both of them. She utilizes a physical budget binder to manage expenses efficiently in this new financial landscape.

Barber’s transition has come at a time when Thailand is increasingly welcoming foreign residents. The introduction of the Destination Thailand Visa in 2024 aims to attract digital nomads and remote workers, presenting opportunities for long-term stays. This has added to the allure of Bangkok for families like Barber’s, who are looking for safety and affordability.

In her new routine, Barber has found time to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. “After dropping my daughter off at school, I plan my day however I like,” she said. This newfound flexibility allows her to explore the city, indulge in self-care, or simply wander around and discover new locations.

Cultural adjustments have not been without challenges. Barber noted differences in personal space and some uncomfortable encounters with strangers, but she remains enamored with the kindness of the Thai people and the enriching experiences available, such as frequent massages and delicious food.

Maleah, now thriving in an international school, has embraced the community. “I love that Thai people are so nice, and we get to do a lot more things that we didn’t in the US,” she shared. Barber has also fostered connections with other expatriates through social media, creating a community group that organizes regular meetups for children to forge friendships.

Barber expressed a sense of achievement and fulfillment, stating, “I’m truly living what they call the soft girl era. I feel like my mental clarity is better. I have more time to do stuff.”

As the duo continues to explore their new home, they embody a growing trend of families seeking a fresh start abroad. The resilience and adaptability of families like the Barbers highlight the profound impact that international relocation can have on personal relationships and overall well-being.

For those considering a significant life change, the story of Donetta and Maleah Barber serves as a powerful reminder of the possibilities that come with embracing new cultures and lifestyles.
