UPDATE: Shea Langeliers of the Oakland Athletics has made baseball history by becoming the fourth catcher ever to hit three home runs in a game on two separate occasions. This remarkable feat occurred during a thrilling 16-7 victory over the Washington Nationals on the night of September 26, 2023.
Langeliers wasted no time, leading off the game with a home run against Nationals’ pitcher MacKenzie Gore. He then added two more homers, including another leadoff shot in the seventh inning off Andry Lara. This explosive performance puts him in elite company, joining legends Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Travis d’Arnaud as the only catchers with multiple three-homer games.
This historic night marks Langeliers’ second three-homer game, with his first occurring on April 9, 2024, against the Texas Rangers. He is also the only catcher in MLB history to achieve a three-homer game from the leadoff spot, showcasing his unique talent and versatility.
Langeliers finished the game with an impressive 5 for 6 at the plate, accumulating three RBIs, scoring four runs, and earning a total of 15 bases—a record tied for the most by a catcher in a single game since 1900. His performance is not only a personal best but also contributed to the A’s season-high total of 24 hits.
In a remarkable display of teamwork, Langeliers’ performance came just weeks after teammate Nick Kurtz made headlines by hitting four home runs in a single game, matching the MLB record with 19 total bases. The duo now becomes the first pair of teammates since 1900 to achieve 15 or more total bases in the same season.
The Athletics’ victory was a showcase of offensive power, with players Brent Rooker and JJ Bleday also contributing significantly, each recording four hits. This marks the first time since 1979 that the Athletics had three players with four or more hits in a single game.
As the Athletics continue their season, all eyes will be on Langeliers and his remarkable achievements. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see what this young star will accomplish next as he solidifies his place in baseball history.
Stay tuned for more updates on Langeliers and the Athletics as they push through the remainder of the season.
