UPDATE: A group of seniors in The Bronx is taking the social media world by storm, amassing nearly 2 million followers across Instagram and TikTok in just one month. The “Old Friend Club,” formed at RiverSpring Living, is redefining what it means to be a social media influencer, proving that age is just a number.
The initiative, launched in October 2023, has quickly gained traction, captivating audiences with the wisdom and humor of its members. “My daughter says, ‘Oh Mother, you just keep going on, we’re going to see you in Hollywood!’” exclaimed Shirley Johnson, 85, who has lived at the nursing home for nearly five years.
The Old Friend Club features eight standout seniors who share life advice, pop culture commentary, and engaging games, creating a unique platform that resonates with viewers of all ages. Johnson and her friends have become internet sensations, with Johnson even going viral for her impressive celebrity matchmaking skills.
The initiative was spearheaded by Publity, a UK-based social media company, which aims to uplift elderly communities. The success in the UK prompted them to expand to the US, where they discovered a significant audience eager for authentic content from seniors.
Seniors auditioned for the club, showcasing their vibrant personalities, and the final cast includes Lita Gottesman, 88, known for her candid life motto, and Irma H. Clement, the club’s oldest member at 105. Gottesman advocates for self-love, stating, “If I like myself, you’re going to like me.”
The emotional impact of the project is profound. Johnson expressed how participating has reignited her joy after personal losses, including the death of her husband and her leg amputation. “The purpose is to keep on living,” she says, inspiring others facing similar challenges.
Viewers are forming connections with these seniors, as noted by Ollie Williams, Publity’s creative director. “People relate to them and say, ‘So-and-so’s answer is exactly what I would have said,’” Williams explained. The interaction fosters a bridge between generations, highlighting shared human experiences regardless of age.
The Old Friend Club isn’t just about entertainment; it’s a movement toward celebrating life at any age. Gottesman emphasized the importance of pursuing happiness without regrets, while Clement shared her secret to longevity through a poem: “For a life fulfilled, one should sparkle like a diamond, shine like a star.”
With such a rapid rise to fame, the Old Friend Club showcases the power of community and connection in a digital age. As they continue to engage audiences, these seniors are not only redefining their golden years but also inspiring millions to embrace life fully.
