URGENT UPDATE: The Salvation Army is in a race against time to gather toy donations for 400 local families in San Diego, with just one week remaining before distribution begins. The organization currently faces a significant shortage, needing hundreds more toys to ensure every child receives a special Christmas experience.
As of today, the warehouse at the Salvation Army Kroc Center is filled with some donations—basketballs, dolls, and colored markers—but these items do not meet the overwhelming demand. Glynis Eckert, marketing director for the Kroc Center, highlighted the urgency, stating, “Even like a Barbie house, this is something that we’ll put aside specifically for a family that maybe we know had a bit extra difficult time this year.”
Officials report that the toy shortage is particularly pronounced for older children. Janet Reade, director of volunteers and community engagement, noted, “The age groups that we get the most donations for tend to be younger children, but our pre-selected families can register their children of all ages: 0 all the way up to 12, so we are looking for toys for those older age groups.”
Time is running out, with the distribution event set for next week. Parents from a pre-registered list will select toys for their children, with the goal of providing each family with three to four toys per child. Eckert emphasized, “We, of course, are hoping to have every parent be able to get three or four toys for their children.”
If donations do not increase, the Salvation Army may be forced to purchase toys at their own expense, which would significantly strain their financial resources and impact their broader mission of spreading holiday joy. The organization aims to provide not just toys but a complete Christmas experience, including gift wrap, bows, and food boxes.
“A sack full of toys for their children, along with gift wrap, bows, and gift tags, so that when they go home, and they’re wrapping all their toys for their family, they feel like they’ve had the Christmas experience,” Eckert said.
Donations are urgently needed and can be made in person at the Kroc Center, online, or through monetary contributions. To contribute to this vital cause and help ensure that every child in San Diego experiences the joy of Christmas, click here to donate.
