Rubio: U.S. Troops Offshore Venezuela Serve as Urgent Leverage

UPDATE: Secretary of State Marco Rubio has declared it “premature” to consider elections in Venezuela, emphasizing that immediate focus must be on revitalizing the troubled oil industry and combating drug trafficking. This announcement comes amidst heightened tensions following the January 4, 2023 apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as U.S. military forces maintain a significant presence offshore.

In a series of urgent interviews with ABC, CBS, and NBC, Rubio outlined the U.S. strategy to leverage its military assets—approximately 15,000 troops stationed across multiple warships in the Caribbean—to apply pressure on Maduro’s remaining government officials. “We will continue to strike drug boats and detain oil tankers as we work to stabilize and run Venezuela,” Rubio stated, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to curbing drug trade and ensuring U.S. national security.

Rubio’s remarks follow President Trump’s confirmation of a “quarantine” on Venezuelan oil exports, aimed at disrupting Maduro’s ties to South American drug gangs while preventing adversarial nations from gaining influence in the region. “What’s going to happen here is that we have a quarantine on their oil,” Rubio emphasized, highlighting that Venezuela’s economy will remain stagnant until the U.S. demands are met.

“As we move forward, we will set the conditions so that we no longer have in our hemisphere a Venezuela that serves as a crossroads for adversaries, including Iran and Hezbollah,” Rubio added during his appearance on ABC News’s “This Week.”

Rubio also confirmed that the U.S. military is prepared for additional actions if necessary. Although a second strike was discussed following Maduro’s capture, military commanders opted against it, focusing instead on the ongoing operations aimed at detaining vessels involved in illicit activities.

While acknowledging the U.S. commitment to democracy, Rubio stressed that immediate national interests take precedence. “Considering new elections is premature at this point,” he said, as the administration prioritizes dismantling the connections between the Venezuelan government and drug trafficking networks. “Our goal is to stop the flow of drugs into the United States and ensure safety and security for our citizens.”

The situation continues to unfold as Maduro and several officials from his government face serious charges, including allegations of collusion with Colombian drug cartels. They await trial in New York City, adding further urgency to U.S. efforts to assert control over Venezuela’s oil resources.

As tensions mount, observers are urged to watch for further developments regarding U.S. military actions and diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region. The ongoing quarantine on Venezuelan oil is intricately linked to plans for U.S. oil companies to potentially assist in revitalizing Venezuela’s oil industry, despite the U.S.’s current status as a net oil exporter.

Rubio firmly stated, “We’re not going to allow the Western Hemisphere to be a base of operations for adversaries.” The coming weeks will be critical as the U.S. navigates its dual objectives of securing its borders and supporting the Venezuelan people.
