UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, Rocklin High School has captured its first CIF NorCal Open Division volleyball title, defeating the powerhouse Archbishop Mitty in a thrilling five-set match on November 18, 2025. Led by former Mitty coach Bret Almazan-Cezar, Rocklin rallied from a set down to claim victory on Mitty’s home court in San Jose.
This championship is particularly significant as it marks a historic moment for Rocklin, which had never before reached this pinnacle of success. Following a tense match, the final scores were 25-21, 16-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-10, showcasing Rocklin’s resilience and determination.
The match began with Rocklin taking an early lead, forcing Mitty, ranked No. 7 nationally, to play catch-up from the outset. Despite Mitty’s strong performance in the second and third sets, Rocklin’s tenacity shone through in the fourth set, where they seized control and did not look back.
“It was interesting because I told the kids, ‘Mitty’s never lost a NorCal championship match in this gym,’ and I go, ‘Oh, that’s me,’” Almazan-Cezar reflected after the match.
Mitty’s first-year head coach, Jake Spain, acknowledged the challenges faced by his team, saying, “It makes it hard when you’re playing from behind against a good offensive team.” The Monarchs, who had not lost a set in over a month, were unable to maintain their momentum against Rocklin’s relentless offense.
Rocklin’s victory not only highlights their impressive season, finishing with a record of 37-4, but also ends Mitty’s hopes of reclaiming their dominance in NorCal championships. Almazan-Cezar’s return to the gym where he secured 11 state titles with Mitty adds a dramatic twist to the narrative.
As the Thunder celebrated their historic win, the emotional toll was evident on Mitty’s players, particularly Makenna Crosson, who finished her high school career with a remarkable 25 kills. “It’s heartbreaking,” Spain said. “I love these seniors who give every fiber of their being to wanting to be champions.”
Looking ahead, both teams will reflect on this pivotal match as they prepare for future challenges. Rocklin will savor this monumental achievement, while Mitty will regroup to build on its successes as they aim for redemption next season.
This match is a testament to the unpredictability of high school sports, where anything can happen on game day. Stay tuned for more updates on volleyball championships across the region.
