UPDATE: The Rocklin Unified School District has just announced a ban on Class Two e-bikes—those equipped with throttles and no pedal assist—across its 12 elementary and 2 middle schools. This urgent decision impacts hundreds of students and is a direct response to a troubling rise in crashes and safety concerns linked to these high-speed e-bikes.
The ban, effective February 2, 2026, comes as authorities report that these e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 20 mph, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Rocklin Police Chief Rustin Banks stated, “We’ve had some really, really close calls here. We’ve seen a significant amount of hospitalized e-bike riders.” This alarming trend has prompted the district to take action before a severe incident occurs.
Parents and students alike are reacting to this news. Thirteen-year-old Ben Higbee expressed disappointment, saying, “Kids have spoiled it for us, driving recklessly and popping wheelies.” With parents often busy, he worries about how he will commute to school without an e-bike.
The increase in e-bike usage has been notable over the past two years, prompting joint efforts by the district and Rocklin police to educate families on safe riding practices. However, despite their initiatives, such as e-bike patrols, the situation has not improved. Chief Banks acknowledged the thrill these bikes offer to young riders but emphasized the need for safety. “It’s really a motorcycle,” he said, highlighting the dangers associated with the e-bikes.
To help families adapt to the new policy, Rocklin Unified has outlined a phased implementation plan. Starting in December 2025, schools will focus on education regarding the ban. In January 2026, students caught with non-compliant e-bikes will receive warnings. Full enforcement will commence on February 2, 2026, with consequences including detention, mandatory parent meetings, and the requirement for parents to retrieve banned items from school.
The district aims to clarify that this policy is not a punishment but a measure to ensure the safety of all students. Chief of Communications Sundeep Dosanjh stated, “We strive to provide the best educational experience for all our students and families in Rocklin Unified,” emphasizing the importance of safe transportation options.
As families prepare for the upcoming holiday season, the district is urging them to reconsider any purchases of e-bikes for their children. Traditional bicycles remain a safe alternative.
The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. The safety of students is at the forefront of the district’s decision-making, and as incidents continue to rise, it is crucial for families to be informed and prepared for these changes. The community is encouraged to share their thoughts and concerns as the district navigates this challenging issue.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
