Rockies Suffer 98th Loss as Fans Turn Against Home Team

UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, the Colorado Rockies suffered their 98th loss of the season as they fell 4-3 to the visiting Chicago Cubs at Coors Field on a tense late-August afternoon. A staggering 75% of the fans at the game were reportedly cheering for the Cubs, a painful reality for Rockies players and fans alike.

Pitcher Kyle Freeland, a Denver native, expressed his dismay, stating, “It’s something I don’t enjoy seeing in my home ballpark.” The scene has become all too common, highlighting the franchise’s descent into turmoil since their last playoff appearance in 2018.

The Rockies are on track for their third consecutive season with 100 losses, a disheartening milestone that underscores the team’s struggles. Colorado currently ranks 29th in runs scored and 30th in runs allowed, with a staggering -412 run differential, the worst in modern MLB history.

As the Rockies grapple with an identity crisis, there is a glimmer of hope for change. The franchise recently announced the promotion of Walker Monfort, son of owner Dick Monfort, to a key executive role. Sources indicate that significant changes within the front office may be forthcoming, aimed at revitalizing a beleaguered organization.

Former Rockies star Matt Holliday emphasized the urgency for a reevaluation of the team’s direction. “You have to look in the mirror at three 100-loss seasons,” he said. The Rockies have long been criticized for their draft decisions, with players selected over the past decade accumulating a mere 10 combined WAR, the lowest of any franchise.

Despite ongoing struggles, there are calls for accountability and a renewed focus on player development. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer stated, “We need to honestly evaluate ourselves,” while Freeland reiterated the emotional toll of the team’s performance, adding, “It’s been difficult, mentally.”

The Rockies’ declining attendance figures, dropping from 6th in 2019 to 15th in 2025, reflect a growing discontent among fans who feel disconnected from ownership. This unfortunate trend has raised alarms within the organization, prompting a reassessment of their approach to building a competitive team.

As the 2023 season draws to a close, the urgency for the Rockies to implement a new strategy grows. The potential for change hinges on Walker Monfort’s leadership and whether he can successfully usher in new ideas and perspectives to revitalize the franchise.

Fans and analysts alike are left wondering: Can the Rockies break free from their current state of disarray? As the offseason approaches, all eyes will be on the decisions made by the Monforts and whether they can restore hope to a frustrated fanbase.
