Red Sox Release Buehler, Call Up Top Prospect Tolle for Debut

URGENT UPDATE: The Boston Red Sox have made a significant roster shakeup, releasing veteran right-hander Walker Buehler and calling up top pitching prospect Payton Tolle for his major league debut on July 14, 2023. This bold move follows a series of disappointing performances from Buehler, who has struggled with a 5.45 ERA across 23 games, including 22 starts.

At just 31 years old, Buehler, a two-time All-Star and World Series champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers, signed a lucrative one-year $21.05 million deal with the Red Sox for the 2025 season. However, his recent performance has led to a downward spiral, including a stint in the bullpen as he posted a 7-7 record this season. His struggles come after a rocky recovery from a second Tommy John surgery, raising questions about his future in the league.

In a twist of fate, Tolle, the Red Sox’s second-round pick from TCU in the 2024 MLB amateur draft, is set to face off against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates later tonight. Tolle has demonstrated promise in the minors, boasting a 3.04 ERA over 91.2 innings across three levels, most recently at Triple-A Worcester, where he recorded a 3-5 record.

The Red Sox are also making additional roster changes, recalling Nick Sogard from Worcester while optioning outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia to the same minor league team. These developments signal a critical turning point for the Red Sox as they aim to improve their performance in the second half of the season.

Fans and analysts alike are keenly watching how Tolle’s debut will unfold tonight, especially with Boston’s recent struggles. This urgent development reshapes the team’s pitching strategy and adds an element of excitement to what many hope will be a revitalizing moment for the franchise.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Red Sox navigate this pivotal transition.
