UPDATE: Five veterans from the Reata Glen Retirement Community in Mission Viejo received heartfelt recognition during an emotional Veterans Day ceremony held on November 11, 2025. The event featured the presentation of handmade quilts, a powerful gesture of gratitude for their service to the nation, emphasizing the community’s commitment to honoring those who served.
The ceremony, attended by dozens of residents, was highlighted by the wrapping of “quilts of valor” around the shoulders of the honorees, including two World War II veterans. This special occasion is part of Reata Glen’s annual tribute to veterans, showcasing the deep appreciation felt within the community.
Among the honored was Robert DeLue, a 99-year-old U.S. Army veteran who served from 1944 to 1947. DeLue, who has lived a long and fulfilling life, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’ve never been happier than I am now.” His daughter, Renee Sampedro, shared emotional sentiments, saying, “I’m so proud of my dad today and always.”
The quilts, crafted by residents over the past year, were presented by dedicated volunteers, including Joanne Schaum and Marion Yerxa, who co-direct the program. Schaum remarked on the initiative’s growth, stating, “It was done out of love and respect and admiration.”
Another honoree, Stan Solin, a 95-year-old Korean War veteran, reflected on his unique service in the Army’s Counterintelligence Corps. “We didn’t wear uniforms,” he noted, humbly downplaying his contributions. “I felt slightly embarrassed to be honored.”
The Quilts of Valor Foundation, which has sewn over 427,000 quilts since its inception in 2003, inspired this initiative at Reata Glen. Residents showcased their sewing skills, creating these special blankets to honor their fellow veterans, reinforcing the bonds formed through shared military experiences.
The ceremony included a traditional Presentation of Colors, where veterans from various military branches participated, adding a ceremonial touch to the day. Bob Geltz, a retired Marine Corps Captain, served as Master of Ceremonies, welcoming attendees and emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring those who served.
With the event drawing widespread attention, the community’s dedication to veterans continues to resonate beyond the walls of the retirement home. The heartfelt tributes and emotional stories serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces.
As the community reflects on the significance of Veterans Day, Reata Glen reinforces its commitment to honoring the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting freedoms. The stories of these veterans and the love and respect shown through projects like Quilts of Valor highlight the enduring impact of gratitude in action.
Residents and families are encouraged to share their experiences and celebrate the sacrifices of their loved ones, continuing the legacy of appreciation for veterans. This year’s ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of the community’s unwavering support and commitment to honoring those who have served.
