UPDATE: In a major announcement today, Purdue guard Braden Smith has been named a unanimous preseason All-American by the Associated Press, earning all 57 votes from a media panel. This news comes just a week after Purdue was crowned as the preseason No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll for the very first time.
Smith, who played a pivotal role in the Boilermakers’ journey to the 2024 national championship game, opted to return for another season instead of entering the NBA draft, mirroring the decision made by teammate Zach Edey. His return not only signals his commitment to the team but also sets high expectations for Purdue’s quest for a national title under coach Matt Painter.
“That’s just how Purdue has always been, how every player has always been,” Smith stated. “We always want to be a part of a program like this, a culture like this.”
Last season, Smith’s performance was historic. He became the first player in NCAA history to record at least 550 points, 300 assists, 150 rebounds, and 75 steals in a single season, averaging 15.8 points, 8.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game as the Boilermakers reached the Sweet 16.
Joining Smith on the prestigious All-American first team are standout players, including JT Toppin from Texas Tech, who received 52 votes, and Yaxel Lendeborg from Michigan, who garnered 30 votes. Toppin had an impressive season with an average of 18.2 points and 9.4 rebounds, leading Texas Tech to the Elite Eight.
Meanwhile, Lendeborg, who transferred from UAB after a successful run, aims to help Michigan achieve its Final Four aspirations after averaging 15.8 points and 11 rebounds in his previous seasons. The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll.
The excitement continues with AJ Dybantsa, the nation’s top recruit, who has committed to BYU, enhancing their chances for a successful season after their Sweet 16 appearance last year. Dybantsa is projected as a potential No. 1 overall NBA draft pick.
Lastly, Alex Condon from Florida has returned for another season after initially declaring for the NBA draft. Condon played a key role in Florida’s national championship win, and with his return, the Gators are ranked No. 3 in the AP preseason poll. He averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds last season and aims to lead Florida to consecutive titles.
As the new college basketball season approaches, all eyes will be on these standout players and their teams. The anticipation is palpable as fans await the thrilling matchups and potential championships ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses!
