UPDATE: The Portland Thorns’ record home unbeaten streak has come to a shocking end as they fell 2-0 to the Kansas City Current at Providence Park on September 16, 2023. This defeat marks the Thorns’ first home loss since October 5, 2024, snapping a remarkable run of 10 consecutive matches without a defeat at home.
From the opening whistle, the Thorns struggled to maintain their composure. The Current capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring just 54 seconds into the match. Ellie Wheeler surged forward to head a cross from Izzy Rodriguez under the crossbar, leaving Mackenzie Arnold helpless in goal. The early strike set the tone for a match dominated by Kansas City, who outshot Portland 12-5 in the first half.
Portland, now sitting in fifth place in the NWSL standings with 26 points, is just two points behind Orlando as they fight for playoff positioning. Meanwhile, Kansas City maintains a commanding 12-point lead over second-place Washington, showcasing their dominance with their fifth consecutive shutout.
The Thorns had opportunities to equalize, particularly through Deyna Castellanos, whose shots in the first half tested Current goalkeeper Lorena Leite. But it was the Current who struck again in the 71st minute, when Temwa Chawinga netted her 11th goal of the season, sealing the victory for Kansas City.
In a glimmer of hope for the Thorns, they announced earlier that they acquired French forward Julie Dufour from Angel City FC in exchange for cash. Dufour made her debut as a substitute in the 82nd minute. Additionally, Olivia Moultrie, who is tied for the NWSL career record in goals for teenage players, came close to scoring late in the game, hitting the crossbar in the 89th minute.
Looking ahead, the Thorns aim to bounce back when they face the last-place Utah Royals on Friday. With the Royals struggling with just one win in 17 games this season, it will be a crucial match for Portland as they strive to secure a playoff spot.
Stay tuned for further updates as the NWSL season heats up!
