Pirates Sign LHP Gregory Soto to Urgent $7.75 Million Deal

BREAKING: The Pittsburgh Pirates have just announced a significant move, securing left-hander Gregory Soto on a one-year contract worth $7.75 million. This deal, confirmed by ESPN sources late Tuesday night, marks a crucial step in the team’s efforts to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Soto, 30, comes off a season where he posted a 4.18 ERA across 70 appearances for the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. A two-time All-Star, he originally made his mark with the Detroit Tigers, where he recorded a 4.13 ERA over four seasons. His hard-throwing capabilities make him a vital addition to the Pirates’ bullpen, which currently features Dennis Santana as the closer.

This signing is part of the Pirates’ strategy to invest in their team, particularly following a disappointing $84 million payroll in 2025. With the offseason in full swing, the Pirates have been actively exploring options to enhance their pitching staff. Soto’s addition reflects their commitment to improving the team’s competitive edge.

Earlier in the offseason, the Pirates showed interest in outfielder Trent Grisham, but he ultimately accepted a qualifying offer from the New York Yankees. They also pursued designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who chose to re-sign with the Phillies instead.

As the 2024 MLB season approaches, all eyes will be on Soto as he joins a team eager to turn their fortunes around. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this new addition impacts the Pirates’ performance on the field.

The Pirates are expected to make further moves as the offseason continues, aiming to solidify their roster and enhance their chances for success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
