Perplexity Launches Feature to Compete with NotebookLM’s Source Control

UPDATE: Perplexity has just announced a groundbreaking feature that allows users to control their knowledge base similar to Google’s NotebookLM. This new addition, known as “Set sources for search,” enables users to limit results to their specified documents, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated answers.

This development comes as users increasingly demand enhanced functionality from AI tools. By allowing users to upload their own files for reference, Perplexity creates a controlled environment that markedly reduces the risk of misinformation. The feature is set to revolutionize how users interact with AI-powered searches, providing a more tailored experience.

When users create a new thread in Perplexity, they will see a Globe icon, which indicates the new feature. By clicking on it, users can select categories such as Web, Academic, Social, or Finance. However, toggling off all categories allows users to utilize only the sources they provide. For instance, if a user uploads lecture notes, Perplexity can generate accurate answers based solely on those materials.

Why It Matters Right Now: In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, having the ability to filter sources is crucial for students, researchers, and professionals alike. This new feature not only enhances the user experience but also prioritizes information integrity, which is vital in academic and professional environments.

Perplexity’s functionality stands out against competitors like NotebookLM, which, while comprehensive, limits users to the documents they’ve uploaded without the ability to reference live web sources. The flexibility of Perplexity’s feature allows users to address knowledge gaps by incorporating real-time data from the internet alongside their own materials.

This is particularly relevant for users who may find themselves frustrated with NotebookLM’s structure, which requires the creation of multiple notebooks for different queries. With Perplexity, users can simply upload needed files and start querying immediately, streamlining the process significantly.

Moreover, while Perplexity may not replicate all of NotebookLM’s advanced learning tools, it offers a robust alternative for those seeking source-grounded responses. Users can also leverage Perplexity’s quiz and flashcard features based on uploaded files, making it an appealing option for those looking to enhance their learning experience.

What’s Next: As users begin to explore this feature, the impact on academic and professional settings will be closely monitored. Early adopters are likely to provide feedback that could lead to further enhancements, solidifying Perplexity’s position in the competitive AI landscape.

Stay tuned for more updates as Perplexity continues to innovate and adapt to user needs. This latest feature could redefine how we approach AI-assisted learning and information retrieval. Share this news with colleagues and fellow students to ensure they benefit from these exciting developments.
