UPDATE: Indiana Pacers center Ivica Zubac will not make his highly anticipated debut until he fully recovers from an ongoing ankle injury, according to Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle. Zubac is also currently on paternity leave following the birth of his first child.
In a press conference just hours before the game against the Milwaukee Bucks on February 10, 2023, Carlisle confirmed that Zubac has been dealing with this ankle issue since December. “It’s kind of yo-yo’d a little bit,” he stated, emphasizing that the team will not rush Zubac back into action until he is completely ready.
Indiana acquired Zubac in a blockbuster trade with the LA Clippers just days ago. The deal involved sending guard Bennedict Mathurin, center Isaiah Jackson, two first-round draft picks, and a second-round pick to Los Angeles. This move comes as the Pacers look to fill a significant gap at center following the loss of Myles Turner in free agency.
With Indiana struggling at 13-38, the team currently holds the third-worst record in the NBA, sitting 10.5 games behind the last play-in spot. The pressure is on for Zubac to integrate quickly into a team desperate for improvement.
Throughout the current season, Zubac has made a substantial impact, averaging 14.4 points and 11 rebounds while shooting an impressive 61%. His playing style, however, differs significantly from Turner, who is known for his ability to stretch the floor. Notably, Zubac has yet to attempt a three-point shot this season.
Despite his injury and personal circumstances, Carlisle remains optimistic about Zubac’s long-term potential. “I feel both those guys are top-10 centers in the NBA,” he said, referring to Zubac and Turner. “We’re fortunate to have made the deal.”
The Pacers traded a protected first-round pick for Zubac, ensuring they hold the rights to the 2026 draft selection unless it lands in the top 1-4. If it doesn’t convey by then, it will convert to an unprotected pick in 2031, adding further stakes to the Pacers’ current season.
As fans eagerly await Zubac’s return to the court, the Pacers face critical decisions ahead. Will Zubac’s return bolster their chances of turning around a dismal season? The spotlight is on the Pacers as they strive to rebuild and regain competitiveness in the league.
Stay tuned for further developments on Zubac’s recovery and his eventual debut with the Pacers.
