BREAKING: The Baltimore Orioles have officially placed rookie right-hander Brandon Young on the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his challenging season. Young, who struggled with a record of 1-7 and a 6.24 ERA in 12 starts, suffered a left hamstring strain that hindered his recovery efforts.
Young’s season took a promising turn on August 15 when he secured his only victory against the Houston Astros, nearly achieving a perfect game until an infield hit broke his bid in the eighth inning. However, shortly after, he sustained his injury while covering first base, which led to his initial placement on the 15-day injured list. With the end of September nearing and no signs of recovery, the decision to move him to the longer-term IL was made.
Interim manager Tony Mansolino highlighted the silver lining of Young’s experience: “He kind of found out how his stuff plays in the big leagues.” Although his numbers were below expectations, the 26-year-old pitcher gained invaluable insights that could benefit him in the upcoming 2026 season. His earlier outings, particularly a strong performance against the Mets on July 8, where he struck out six and allowed just five hits in 5 1/3 innings, showcased his potential.
In addition to Young’s move, the Orioles have announced several roster changes today. Roansy Contreras and Emmanuel Rivera have been called up from Triple-A Norfolk, while infielder Vimael Machin has been designated for assignment after a disappointing stint, batting just .091 in four games.
Mansolino emphasized that Rivera’s presence at third base will enhance the infield defense, especially with Jordan Westburg currently on the IL. Furthermore, pitcher Tyler Wells is expected to return to the team following his recovery from elbow surgery in June 2024, contributing to a six-man starting rotation.
The Orioles are focused on making the most of the remaining games this season while looking forward to rebuilding for the future. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
