URGENT UPDATE: The Oregon Ducks have officially confirmed that Gary Bryant Jr. will step in as the starting punt returner for the upcoming 2025 season, following the departure of standout player Tez Johnson. Johnson’s remarkable average of 11.92 yards per punt return last season ranked him 15th nationally, making his absence a significant change for the Ducks.
Bryant, who previously had five returns for 42 yards last season, is set to showcase his skills as Oregon’s primary punt returner when they face Montana State in their opening game. Special teams coordinator Joe Lorig highlighted Johnson’s game-changing impact, stating, “Replacing that’s difficult. But at the same time, I’m really excited about Gary Bryant. He’s really talented, really secure with the ball, and makes great decisions.”
The transition comes after Bryant spent much of last season recovering from injuries. He gained valuable experience during the last five games, stepping up when Johnson was sidelined with a shoulder injury. In addition to his time at Oregon, Bryant has a proven track record with 11 returns for 50 yards during his tenure at USC, making him the most experienced player in this role for the Ducks.
With the season approaching, Bryant expressed his determination: “I want it bad. Going out there, putting my head down and earning the position. That’s what I’m used to doing. I’m excited for it.” His reliable decision-making has been emphasized by head coach Dan Lanning, who noted, “Always our No. 1 goal is possession of the ball. He’s done a really good job of that.”
As Oregon prepares for the season, the punt return team has seen some turnover, with fellow receivers Dakorian Moore and Malik Benson also vying for roles during fall camp. Redshirt-freshmen Dillon Gresham and Jeremiah McClellan have also been practicing in this crucial position.
The Ducks are set to kick off their season against Montana State with high hopes for Bryant to make a significant impact. Fans are eager to see how this change will shape Oregon’s special teams strategy as they aim for a strong performance in 2025.
