According to reports from Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, Mayar was at the Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, with a friend when they encountered difficulties in the water. While Mayar’s friend managed to swim to safety, he bravely returned to assist Mayar, who struggled and ultimately went underwater. Rescue teams recovered Mayar’s body late Saturday night.

“Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing,” stated Omaha men’s basketball coach Chris Crutchfield. “After competing against him for two years, we were elated to add him to our team, and he made tremendous progress this summer. Standing at 6 feet 8 inches, Mayar was raised in Salt Lake City and had recently transferred from North Dakota after averaging 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds last season. He notably scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his previous team’s season finale against South Dakota before making the move to Omaha.
