Oldenburg Film Festival Unveils 5 Must-See Indie Films Now

UPDATE: The 2025 Oldenburg Film Festival kicks off from September 10–14, showcasing an eclectic mix of indie films that are already generating buzz. Festival-goers are eager to experience five standout features that promise to deliver thrilling narratives and unique storytelling.

This year’s lineup includes a captivating blend of genres, from a poignant Irish family drama to a provocative Mexican thriller. The Hollywood Reporter highlights these must-see films, guaranteed to resonate with audiences and provoke discussion.

First up is the Irish drama Horseshoe, where four siblings return to their childhood home following their father’s death, only to confront his unyielding spirit. With a ticking clock to decide the fate of their family estate, deep-seated resentments and long-buried secrets surface, transforming the home into a tense battlefield of emotions.

Next, Under the Burning Sun, directed by Yun Xie, tells the harrowing story of Mowanza, a young woman navigating a landscape of despair and danger after an assault in a country where abortion is illegal. Armed with nothing but a car and a bottle of water, Mowanza embarks on a perilous journey to seek freedom and autonomy, capturing the urgency of women’s rights in a gripping narrative.

From Belgium, Jerome Vandewattyne returns with his latest music satire, Summer Hit Machine. This film delves into the chaotic world of a band locked in the studio, desperately trying to record a hit under the delusions of their eccentric label boss. As sanity slips away, the film promises dark humor and a critical look at the music industry’s pressures.

The festival also features Good Boy, directed by Ben Leonberg. This supernatural horror unfolds through the eyes of Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who senses menacing forces threatening his owner. This unique perspective reinvents the haunted house trope, blending fear with the loyalty of man’s best friend.

Lastly, Cocodrilos, by J. Xavier Velasco, premieres in Europe after a successful launch at the Guadalajara Film Festival. Following Santiago, a photojournalist in Veracruz, the film exposes the stark realities faced by journalists in Mexico. As he risks everything to uncover the truth after his mentor’s murder, the film highlights the courageous battle against corruption and the quest for justice.

The Oldenburg Film Festival remains a pivotal platform for showcasing unconventional narratives that challenge societal norms and reflect pressing issues. With these films set to capture the hearts and minds of viewers, attendees can expect an engaging experience filled with fresh perspectives and powerful storytelling.

Don’t miss out on these unmissable films at the Oldenburg Film Festival. As the festival approaches, anticipation builds, making it a must-visit event for cinephiles and casual viewers alike. Stay tuned for more updates as the festival unfolds!
