Oklahoma Sooners Home Opener This Saturday – Tailgating Changes Announced

UPDATE: The Oklahoma Sooners are set to kick off their home opener against Illinois State this Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. in Norman, Oklahoma. Fans are eagerly anticipating a revamped tailgating experience that promises to enhance game day celebrations.

For the first time ever, the University of Oklahoma will allow free public tailgating on the historic Parrington Oval, also known as the North Oval. This significant change aims to foster a vibrant atmosphere and encourage a win for the Sooners. Fans can start setting up their tailgating spaces on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Tailgaters must adhere to a strict drop-off process at the West Boyd Street-South University Boulevard intersection, where they will have only 15 minutes to unload supplies before moving their vehicles. Public parking will not be available on the North Oval, and vehicles parked improperly may be towed, underscoring the importance of following these new regulations.

The excitement isn’t limited to the North Oval. Other tailgating areas, including North Asp Avenue and Brooks Street, will remain open. Fans can claim space starting at noon the day before the game, but stakes cannot be placed until 6:00 p.m. on Friday for most areas. For Lindsey Street, setup begins at 7:00 a.m. on game day.

Parking is also a vital component of game day logistics. Paid cash lots are available on a first-come, first-served basis at a fee of $30 per vehicle. All vehicles must fit within designated spaces and not obstruct traffic. The university has provided a game day parking map for ease of navigation.

Local businesses are ready for the influx of fans. Jeff Stewart, owner of O’Connell’s Irish Pub and Grille, believes the new tailgating arrangements will boost business. “It gives more fans a chance to walk a short distance to Campus Corner and celebrate,” Stewart stated. He noted that streets in the area are expected to close at 4:00 p.m. Friday to allow businesses to prepare for the weekend crowd.

In addition to tailgating changes, the university is enhancing the game day experience with the “Party at the Palace,” which will feature food trucks, family-friendly activities, and live coverage of the Sooners’ arrival. The footprint of this event has been expanded to accommodate more fans, creating an inviting environment before the game.

Further improvements in concession services include new self-checkout technology and expanded grab-and-go kiosks, ensuring fans can access food and beverages quickly. Digital menu boards have been installed to help attendees navigate their options efficiently, and a new concession stand is available on the upper west deck of the stadium to reduce long lines.

As anticipation builds for the Sooners’ home opener, fans are encouraged to show their Sooner Spirit by sporting Crimson and Cream colors. With a jam-packed schedule of events and activities, this Saturday promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

Stay tuned for more updates as game day approaches!
