Ohio Sports Gambling Probe Targets Guardians’ Clase and Ortiz

URGENT UPDATE: The Ohio Casino Control Commission is collaborating with Major League Baseball (MLB) on a *developing investigation* into Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz following alarming reports of suspicious betting activity. This investigation comes just weeks after officials were alerted on June 30, 2023, by a licensed Ohio sportsbook, signaling a serious breach in sports integrity.

Authorities confirmed that unusual wagering patterns were detected during key games involving the Guardians. Specifically, the investigation centers on two pitches thrown by Ortiz during his starts against Seattle on June 15 and St. Louis on June 27. These anomalies raised red flags and were flagged by a betting-integrity firm, leading to MLB’s intervention.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed deep concerns over the implications of prop betting, stating, “The evidence that prop betting is harming athletics in Ohio is reaching critical mass.” He highlighted the risks posed to athletes and the integrity of the game, calling for a ban on player-specific micro bets before the commission’s next meeting on August 20, 2023.

Both Clase and Ortiz are currently on non-disciplinary paid leave until August 31, 2023, as investigations unfold. The commission’s previous independent probe into suspicious wagering activity on the University of Alabama’s baseball team in 2023 has set a precedent for these serious inquiries.

The stakes are high as Ohio joins the growing list of states grappling with the fallout from sports betting controversies. With 16 states prohibiting prop bets on college athletes, Ohio’s stringent stance reflects a nationwide concern over the impact of gambling on sports integrity.

The situation is *developing*, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses. Residents and sports fans are urged to stay tuned for critical updates as the commission navigates these serious allegations.
