UPDATE: An Ohio couple, Spencer Tepe, 37, and his wife Monique Tepe, 39, were tragically found dead in their Columbus home just one month before their fifth wedding anniversary. The couple was discovered on December 26, 2023, after concerned colleagues called for a welfare check when Spencer failed to show up for work at Athens Dental Depot.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, their two young children, aged 1 and 4, were found unharmed inside the residence. The couple was shot in their home in the upscale Weinland Park neighborhood, a location that once echoed with their wedding vows and laughter. A memorial of flowers now stands outside the home, capturing the community’s shock and sorrow.
Authorities have confirmed the deaths are being investigated as a double homicide, with no signs of forced entry and no weapon found at the scene, raising urgent questions about the motive and the identity of the perpetrator. Columbus police have not issued any warnings to the public regarding an ongoing threat.
The first 911 call was made at 8:58 a.m. by Spencer’s boss, Dr. Mark Valrose, who expressed deep concern for both Spencer and Monique after they failed to respond to calls. “He is always on time, and he would contact us if there were any issues,” Valrose reported, emphasizing the unusual nature of their absence.
Around 9:22 a.m., police arrived for a welfare check but received no response. A friend at the scene later called 911, stating, “There’s a body” and reported hearing children crying inside the home. This prompted immediate concern for the children’s safety. By 10:03 a.m., officers entered the home to find the couple deceased.
As the investigation unfolds, police are conducting a thorough examination of the crime scene and reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage for any potential leads. Officials have not released any information regarding suspects, but forensic analysis is underway to determine how the crime occurred and whether any valuables were taken from the home.
Experts suggest that while the crime appears random, it is essential to consider whether the couple may have been targeted. Juliette Kayyem, CNN’s Senior National Security Analyst, remarked on the rarity of such incidents without forced entry, highlighting that attention will focus on the couple’s social circles.
The Tepe family has expressed their heartbreak, describing Spencer and Monique as a “deeply happy” couple united by love and adventure. “We are heartbroken beyond words,” their family stated, pledging to see justice served and ensure a secure future for their children.
In the wake of this tragedy, Athens Dental Depot has closed for the rest of the week to mourn the loss of Spencer, who was not only a devoted father and husband but also an esteemed member of the dental community. He was known for his kindness and dedication, while Monique was celebrated for her nurturing spirit as a mother and educator.
As the community grapples with this senseless loss, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as they seek answers for a grieving family and community.
