Oakland Mourns Beloved Coach John Beam at Emotional Memorial

UPDATE: Oakland is in mourning as the community gathers to honor the legacy of Coach John Beam, who was fatally shot last month at Laney College. A memorial service held on December 4, 2025, at Everett and Jones Barbecue drew hundreds of friends, former athletes, and loved ones, reflecting the profound impact Beam had on generations of young athletes.

Attendees packed the venue, sharing heartfelt stories of how Beam transformed their lives. Cindi Beam, his widow, embraced each well-wisher, as emotional tributes poured in from those whose paths he influenced. Damon Owens, a 1991 Skyline High School alum, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m thankful for what your husband has done for my life story.”

Coach Beam, a prominent figure in Oakland sports, was known for his unwavering belief in his players. His death sent shockwaves through the city’s tight-knit sports community, highlighting the void left by a man who shaped not only athletic careers but also personal lives. Beam’s legacy as a mentor continues to resonate, with plans already in motion to rename the Skyline High football field in his honor.

Former NFL running back Deon Strother shared a moving anecdote about his time under Beam’s guidance, recalling a challenging homecoming game where he fumbled multiple times. “For him to continue giving me the ball showed that he really loved me and believed in me,” Strother reflected, showcasing the deep bonds Beam fostered.

The memorial was a poignant reminder of the community spirit Beam instilled in Oakland. Attendees donned red Skyline jackets, reminiscing about their shared experiences and recognizing the coach’s contributions to their successes. “He touched lives all over the place,” said Jamaal Kizziee, who succeeded Beam as Skyline’s football coach. “We all got brought together through that sense of care. That’s Oakland.”

Many speakers highlighted Beam’s inclusive approach, impacting athletes across all sports. Shalon Cortez, a former athlete diagnosed with autism, credited him with instilling the grit needed to overcome obstacles, stating, “That type of person in your life is the reason why a lot of us have that grit we need to get past obstacles.”

As the community comes together to remember Coach Beam, the emotional tributes serve as a testament to his legacy. His portrait, adorned with his signature mustache and wise eyes, hung prominently at the memorial, symbolizing the enduring influence he had on countless lives.

With his family choosing not to speak publicly at this time, the outpouring of love and gratitude from former students and athletes speaks volumes about the impact Coach John Beam had during his remarkable career. As memorials and tributes continue to emerge, the community stands united in honoring a man whose spirit will forever resonate in Oakland.
