UPDATE: In a significant effort to combat gun violence, Oakland’s Guns to Gardens program successfully collected 52 firearms during its fourth annual gun buyback event, held on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Among the weapons surrendered were two AK-47s and an AR-15, highlighting the urgent need for community action against firearms.
The buyback took place at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where community members were encouraged to turn in unwanted firearms in exchange for cash and gift cards. This year’s event saw a notable turnout, emphasizing the local commitment to reducing gun-related incidents and enhancing public safety.
Officials confirmed that the buyback aims to foster a safer environment by removing dangerous weapons from the streets.
“Every firearm taken off the streets is a step towards a safer Oakland,”
