UPDATE: A fierce gunfight in Brooklyn escalated quickly on Tuesday evening, leading to NYPD officers shooting a 22-year-old felon who had been released on parole just two months ago. The chaotic incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. on Ocean Avenue in Prospect Park South, where two suspects exchanged gunfire, leaving one on the run as police intervened.
NYPD officers patrolling the area heard the gunfire and made a decisive move to confront the situation. “Tonight, our officers ran towards gunfire and bravely confronted a dangerous situation,” emphasized Assistant Chief Frank Giordano during a press conference following the incident.
Officers quickly exited their patrol vehicles, drew their weapons, and fired at Edynesson Bauduy, the suspect closest to them. Bauduy, a two-time convicted violent felon currently on parole until 2030, was struck by at least one bullet and transported to Kings County Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
Bauduy’s criminal history is alarming. He was arrested in 2021, at just 18 years old, for a separate shooting in Brooklyn. After being released, he faced further charges for a violent commercial robbery in South Brooklyn. Pleading guilty to both charges, Bauduy received a concurrent sentence and was released from prison on June 10, 2023.
“If he had received a consecutive sentence for his two distinct violent crimes, he would not be out on the streets right now, involved in yet another shooting that endangers our public,” Giordano stated, highlighting the failures of the criminal justice system. “This is a person who has repeatedly shrugged off the consequences of his actions.”
As officers conducted their duties, the second gunman fled the scene towards Church Avenue, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Police recovered one gun and several shell casings at the shooting site, underscoring the severity of the incident.
This ongoing investigation raises critical questions about public safety and the effectiveness of current sentencing practices for violent offenders. The NYPD is actively pursuing leads to capture the second suspect, and the community remains on high alert as the search continues.
As this situation develops, residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The NYPD’s swift response highlights the risks officers face daily, confronting armed individuals in the line of duty. More updates will follow as the investigation unfolds.
