NYC’s Mamdani Vows Free Childcare, Inspired by New Mexico Model

UPDATE: New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, has just announced a bold plan to provide free childcare for every child under the age of 6, taking inspiration from a recent policy implemented in New Mexico.

This transformative initiative aims to address the skyrocketing costs of childcare in the city, which have increasingly burdened families. With New Mexico’s universal childcare model already in effect as of November 1, Mamdani’s proposal could change the landscape of childcare access in the most expensive city in the U.S.

In a significant move, New Mexico eliminated income limits and copays for childcare, making it universally accessible. This policy not only supports parents but also raises wages for childcare workers, enhancing the overall economic stability of the sector.

Mamdani plans to fund NYC’s initiative by imposing taxes on the wealthiest residents and corporations, with an estimated cost of $6 billion to implement. This funding approach mirrors the strategy that has allowed New Mexico to utilize its oil and natural gas revenues to bolster its childcare programs, generating over $11 billion last year from fracking.

“Childcare is the backbone of our economy,” said Julie Kashen, senior fellow at The Century Foundation. “That makes a really big difference in what else families can afford, what they can save for the future, how they can get out of debt.”

Prior to the policy’s implementation, parents in New Mexico faced average yearly costs of $12,000 per child, a burden many struggled to manage. The state’s initiative aims to boost economic activity by putting money back into parents’ pockets, allowing them to return to work with peace of mind.

In addition to providing free childcare, New Mexico’s policy has raised the minimum wage for childcare workers to $18 per hour, significantly above the state minimum wage. This increase aims to attract more professionals to the industry, addressing a critical shortage in qualified caregivers. Currently, childcare workers earn less than those in many other low-wage jobs, underlining the urgent need for reform.

“They get paid less than dishwashers and dog walkers,” noted Hailey Gibbs, associate director at the Center for American Progress. This wage adjustment, alongside improved benefits, could stabilize the workforce and ensure dedicated professionals remain in the field.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, the pressure is on to deliver a comprehensive, sustainable childcare program that mirrors New Mexico’s successful model. The challenge lies in securing the necessary funding and political support to make free childcare a reality for New York families.

With the rising costs of living and childcare continuing to outpace inflation, this initiative could provide immediate relief to struggling families throughout the city. Mamdani’s commitment to universal childcare is not just a policy proposal; it’s a lifeline for many working parents facing difficult economic decisions.

As developments unfold, all eyes will be on NYC to see if this ambitious plan can transform the childcare landscape and provide the support that families desperately need. Share your thoughts on this vital issue and stay tuned for more updates.
