URGENT UPDATE: The No. 13 Minnesota State women’s hockey team has suffered a stunning 2-1 loss to Bemidji State in the US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum Women’s Faceoff Classic on February 3, 2024.
The Mavericks initially took the lead at 9:17 of the first period when Taylor Otremba found the back of the net, assisted by Zoe Lopez and Mercury Bischoff. However, Bemidji State quickly responded with a power-play goal, leveling the score 1-1 before the period ended.
Despite generating multiple scoring opportunities in the second period, including a power play following a boarding penalty against Bemidji State, Minnesota State could not convert. The Mavericks also successfully killed off a penalty, maintaining the tie as they entered the third period.
“It was a tough WCHA game,”
said associate head coach Jeff Giesen. “We had our chances, but we need to find a way to score some goals.“
The decisive moment came at 12:03 of the final period when Bemidji State scored the go-ahead goal. In a desperate attempt to equalize, Minnesota State pulled goalie Hailey Hansen late in the game, applying intense pressure but ultimately failing to score.
This loss drops Minnesota State’s record to 12-14-2 overall and 6-14-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, Bemidji State improves to 6-19-3, with a conference record of 3-18-1.
Looking ahead, the Mavericks will remain on the road, facing St. Cloud State next Friday. Fans will be eager to see if the team can regroup and convert their chances into goals in the upcoming match.
