URGENT UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve approaches, officials in Fresno, California, are urging partygoers to prioritize safety during celebrations. With the last day of the year being one of the busiest for bars, planning ahead is crucial to ensure a fun yet safe experience.
Bar owner Lewis Everk highlights the unique risks associated with nights like New Year’s Eve, referring to it as “amateur hour,” where many people who don’t typically go out take the opportunity to celebrate. “If things get out of control, it’s best to let someone know,” Everk advises, emphasizing the importance of communication during festivities.
Officials stress that while partying can be enjoyable, it comes with inherent dangers. New state laws now mandate that bars carry Naloxone (commonly known as NarCan) and kits for testing drinks for potential spiking. However, authorities caution that these measures should not be relied upon entirely.
Clovis Police Sgt. Sean O’Brien encourages revelers to inform friends and family about their plans, including when they intend to arrive and leave. “Make sure you’re going out with people who have your back and will keep an eye on you,” O’Brien states. This proactive approach can significantly enhance safety during celebrations.
One of the most critical recommendations is arranging transportation ahead of time. If relying on rideshare services, O’Brien urges users to verify driver and vehicle information thoroughly. “All of them have safety precautions in place to let you verify the driver’s identity, including vehicle color and license plate,” he explains.
Bar owners like Everk are taking responsibility as well, pledging to cut off patrons who appear intoxicated to prevent drunk driving incidents. “I’d rather have somebody mad at me for cutting them off than to know they didn’t make it home,” Everk says.
With just hours left until the New Year, it’s vital for everyone to take these safety measures seriously. As the clock ticks down, prioritize safety to ensure a memorable celebration without unfortunate incidents. Make this New Year’s Eve one to remember for all the right reasons.
Stay safe, stay smart, and enjoy the festivities responsibly.
