UPDATE: A new YouGov poll reveals that 69% of American adults support Zohran Mamdani‘s proposal to raise taxes on millionaires and corporations. This major finding highlights the widespread appeal of the mayor-elect’s policy agenda just days after his victory in New York City.
The poll, conducted between November 5 and 8, 2023, shows that Mamdani’s ambitious plans resonate nationwide, with strong backing from a diverse political spectrum. Notably, 40% of self-identified Republicans also support the tax hike, illustrating the cross-party appeal of his economic strategy.
In addition to the tax proposal, Mamdani’s plan for free childcare for children under five received overwhelming support, with 66% of respondents backing the initiative. His rent freeze proposal for lower-income tenants also garnered considerable approval, with 65% in favor.
Even some of Mamdani’s more controversial proposals saw majority support. Approximately 57% of respondents indicated they would approve of opening city-run grocery stores, while 56% supported increasing the minimum wage to $30 by 2030. However, the idea of permanently eliminating bus fares was the least popular, with just 53% approval.
Mamdani’s victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa in a closely watched race has sparked significant interest in his policies. Despite heavy opposition funding from wealthy billionaires who expressed skepticism about his proposals, many in the business community are now voicing hopes for his success as mayor.
As January 1, 2026 approaches, when Mamdani will officially take office, the implications of his policies are expected to resonate far beyond the five boroughs of New York City.
The YouGov poll included responses from 1,133 adult U.S. citizens, reflecting a robust sample size that underscores the legitimacy of these findings.
Stay tuned for more updates as Mamdani prepares to implement his transformative agenda. This poll indicates a significant shift in public sentiment towards progressive policies, setting the stage for a potentially historic term for New York’s new mayor.
