New OLED TV Tests Reveal Surprising Results – One Stands Out

UPDATE: In a groundbreaking head-to-head test of this year’s flagship OLED TVs, one model has emerged as a surprising contender, but not for the right reasons. What Hi-Fi? has just announced the results following rigorous evaluations of the Sony Bravia 8 II, Samsung S95F, LG G5, and Panasonic Z95B in a windowless testing facility.

While the testing process for the What Hi-Fi? Awards 2025 is ongoing, initial findings indicate that one TV consistently overexceeded its brightness levels, leading to a less-than-ideal viewing experience. This revelation is crucial for consumers eager to invest in next-generation home entertainment systems.

During the testing, it became apparent that although higher brightness can enhance HDR content, one particular model’s aggressive brightness settings detracted from the overall picture quality. This TV’s performance was notably jarring, with brightness levels that left viewers distracted rather than immersed in the films.

The testing team, which includes seasoned AV experts, ran through standard evaluations, including a critical scene from the film Dune: Part 2 and multiple sequences from Civil War. They confirmed that while some testers appreciated the “extra oomph,” the extreme fluctuations in brightness were ultimately disruptive.

Critically, the team used a test disc mastered to 4000 nits, which served as a benchmark for assessing how well each TV managed brightness without sacrificing detail. The results revealed that one TV’s overly bright settings led to a lack of finesse, making scenes appear artificially lit and detracting from the directors’ intended visual storytelling.

As industry insiders, the team warns consumers to be wary of marketing tactics emphasizing peak brightness as the primary selling point. Instead, they stress that for an authentic cinematic experience, factors like picture finesse and adherence to the director’s vision should take precedence.

What’s next? The full results and reviews will be published soon, providing deeper insights into how these TVs stack up against each other. For those considering a new OLED TV, it’s vital to stay tuned for the final verdict, which could significantly influence purchasing decisions in the rapidly evolving market.

Stay alert for more updates from the What Hi-Fi? testing team as they continue to evaluate and compare the latest in home entertainment technology.
