NEW Health, a nonprofit organization based in northeastern Washington, has secured $2 million in funding to enhance job opportunities in a rural area that has faced significant healthcare challenges. This funding was approved as part of a broader congressional resolution aimed at reopening the federal government, which included support for multiple projects across Washington state.
According to Desiree Sweeney, CEO of NEW Health, the financial boost will create both clinical and nonclinical positions within the organization. This initiative aims to strengthen workforce development and improve access to dental and health services for future generations in the region. Sweeney emphasized the expansive reach of the organization, stating, “We cover about 5,600 square miles in Ferry, Stevens, and Pend Oreille counties, as well as having a mobile unit that deploys out to schools for physicals, dental access days, career fairs, and health fairs.”
The impact of this funding is expected to extend beyond Chewelah, positively affecting the entire eastern region of Washington. Earlier this year, local residents experienced the closure of essential services, including orthopedic care and the DominiCare program at Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital. These closures were attributed to financial pressures, including cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, increased operational costs, and payment denials from insurers.
In a recent release, Providence highlighted that these challenges are likely to worsen, particularly with the impending cuts to crucial safety-net programs included in the recently enacted HR1, also known as the One Beautiful Bill Act.
Sweeney acknowledged the loss of local behavioral health resources and stressed NEW Health’s commitment to addressing community needs. “When we see a lot of changes in the healthcare landscape, especially around critical access hospitals, NEW Health is leaning into our communities. We’re community invested,” she stated.
The funding from Congress represents a significant step towards rebuilding healthcare resources and job opportunities in a region that has been underserved. With the support of this investment, NEW Health aims to continue its mission of providing comprehensive healthcare services and fostering economic development in northeastern Washington.
