BREAKING: On September 14, 2025, a seismic shift in Australia’s internet landscape is set to occur as NBN Co launches unprecedented speed upgrades across its networks. This marks the most significant enhancement since the NBN’s inception in 2009. Internet plans will soar to new heights, with homes connected via fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre coax (HFC) set to benefit immensely.
Under the new NBN structure, those currently on the NBN 100 plan will be upgraded to a blistering 500Mbps, five times faster than before. Additionally, the NBN 250 tier will see speeds jump to 750Mbps, while the NBN 1000 will now have a minimum speed of 750Mbps and introduce a new top speed of 2,000Mbps (NBN 2000).
This upgrade is critical as Australia currently ranks 63rd globally for average fixed-line internet speeds, according to Ookla. With these improvements, the nation aims to enhance its competitive standing against other developed countries.
Jonathan Prosser, Chief Strategy Officer at Aussie Broadband, revealed that extensive preparations have been underway for years. “There is actually a truckload of work that we’ve had to do in order to be ready,” he stated. The shift to CVC Max—which eliminates traditional speed caps—ensures that network speeds will match the capabilities of the upgraded infrastructure.
Despite the impending speed enhancements, Aussie Broadband assures customers that prices will remain stable, with some plans even seeing reductions. This is a relief for consumers eager to experience the new speeds without financial strain.
The excitement is already palpable as other providers, like Exetel, have preemptively rolled out their own 500Mbps plans ahead of the official launch, stirring competition within the market. Aussie Broadband, however, is committed to a more strategic rollout rather than rushing into the fray. Prosser emphasized that “for the NBN 500 plan to be a compelling thing to buy would effectively make a retail price marketably lower than your resale price.”
As the September launch date approaches, consumers are encouraged to check their NBN connection types and consider upgrading their routers to fully leverage the upcoming speed boosts. The anticipation is building, with many Australians eager to take advantage of these enhanced capabilities, especially with plans starting at a competitive AU$69 per month for the new speed tiers.
Expect most NBN providers to offer the upgraded plans on day one, making it essential for households to assess their current internet service and explore options that best meet their needs. The rollout represents not only a technological leap but also a vital step towards bridging the digital divide in Australia.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the launch date. This is a pivotal moment for internet users across Australia, and the implications of these changes will be felt nationwide.
