BREAKING: Former NBA All-Star Micheal Ray Richardson has died at the age of 70 in Lawton, Oklahoma, following a short but intense battle with prostate cancer. His attorney and friend, John Zelbst, confirmed the news just hours ago, leaving many in the basketball community in shock.
Richardson, known for his incredible talent and tumultuous career, was a four-time NBA All-Star, celebrated for his time with the New York Knicks, where he was drafted fourth overall in the 1978 NBA Draft. His legacy is marked by both his outstanding performance on the court and his controversial struggles off it.
“This is a tremendous loss for the basketball world and everyone who knew Micheal,” Zelbst stated. “He was not just a great player, but a remarkable person who overcame enormous odds.”
Richardson’s career was characterized by significant achievements, including leading the NBA in steals three times and earning the title of 1985 NBA Comeback Player of the Year. He averaged a career-high 20.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 3.0 steals per game during the 1984-85 season with the New Jersey Nets.
However, Richardson’s journey was not without its challenges. He was banned from the NBA in 1986 after violating the league’s drug policy for the third time, a moment he described as his “darkest day.” Following his ban, he played in the Continental Basketball Association and later in Italy and France before retiring in 2002.
Richardson’s impact extended beyond his playing days. He coached various teams, leading the Oklahoma/Lawton-Fort Still Cavalry to three consecutive CBA championships and the London Lightning in NBL Canada. He also dedicated time to coaching basketball camps for underserved communities.
His son, Michael Amir Junior Richardson, is currently a professional soccer player in Italy, playing for Fiorentina and representing Morocco nationally.
Earlier this year, Richardson celebrated his 70th birthday with a surprise party in Phoenix, emphasizing his gratitude for life despite the hurdles he faced. “I’m still here after all the s— I’ve gone through,” he expressed, reflecting on the support of friends and family during challenging times.
Richardson’s story is not just one of talent but also redemption and resilience. He co-authored a book titled “Banned: How I squandered an All-Star NBA Career Before Finding a Redemption”, capturing his journey and offering inspiration to many.
As tributes pour in from fans and former players alike, the basketball community mourns the loss of a player who was not only exceptional on the court but also a testament to overcoming adversity.
